United Fire & Casualty Co. Reports Consolidated Earnings Results for the Third Quarter and Nine Months Ended September 30, 2009

United Fire & Casualty Co. reported consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. For the quarter, the company reported a net loss of $10.2 million or $0.38 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2009, compared with a net loss of $16.8 million or $0.63 per diluted share for the same period a year ago. Net operating loss was $11.4 million or $0.43 per share in the third quarter of 2009, compared with net operating loss of $14.1 million or $0.53 per share in the third quarter of 2008. Pretax catastrophe losses, excluding loss development on Hurricane Katrina claims litigation, totaled $9.5 million in the third quarter of 2009, versus $36.7 million in the third quarter of 2008. Loss before income taxes was $18.6 million compared to the $28.2 million for the same period a year ago. Year to date, the company reported a net loss of $12.2 million or $0.46 per diluted share in 2009, compared with net income of $1.8 million or $0.07 per diluted share in 2008. Net operating loss was $2.7 million or $0.10 per share compared with net operating income of $4.6 million or $0.17 per share for the nine months ended September 30, 2008. Loss before income taxes was $28.5 million compared to the $6.8 million for the same period a year ago. Pretax catastrophe losses, excluding loss development on Hurricane Katrina claims litigation, totaled $19.6 million through September 30, 2009, versus $53.1 million through September 30, 2008. Book value has climbed more than 6% over the past nine months to $25.60 as of September 30, 2009.

On October 7, 2009, United Fire & Casualty Co. announced that Jack B. Evans, vice chairman of board, had been named interim chairman of the board of directors. Evans will immediately assume the post left vacant by the untimely passing of J. Scott McIntyre Jr., who died on October 6, 2009, after serving as chairman for the past 34 years.
