ExxonMobil Chemical's affiliate TonenGeneral Sekiyu k.k. and Toray Industries Inc. have agreed to establish a global joint venture for the battery separator film business. It will develop, manufacture and sell lithium ion battery (LIB) separator film and introduce next-generation films to the market. The joint venture will combine Toray's plastic film processing and polymer science capabilities with Tonen's existing lithium ion battery separator film business and technology. It will build on ExxonMobil's more than 20 years of experience and success in providing separator films, including for use in the personal electronics market, as well as support the development of future LIB applications in hybrid-electric and electric vehicles.
Toray Industries Inc. announced that it has won an order for water treatment membranes to be used at the world's biggest desalination plant, which will be built in Algeria. The membranes will be delivered next year, with the facility slated to come onstream in 2011. The plant will have a daily water production capacity of 500,000 cu. meters, 50% more than the current record holder, a plant in Israel. The latest order is company's third plant-related deal in Algeria, with the three orders valued at a combined JPY 3.8 billion ($42.1 million). Together, the three plants will produce about 10% of the water used in Algerian daily life. The company will supply reverse-osmosis membranes better able to remove boron. The new membranes are produced with the firm's newly developed technology to make tiny pores of less than one nanometer, improving the boron removal rate from the previous 93% to 95%.
