Key developments for Syngenta AG (SYENF)

Syngenta Receives Approval for New Corn Technologies in Brazil

Syngenta AG announced that its genetically modified corn traits MIR162 and Bt11xGA21 are now fully approved for cultivation in Brazil. This follows the approval by the National Biosafety Committee and the thirty day clearance period. The approval of these advanced technologies will offer Brazilian growers increased productivity, higher grain quality and reduced production costs. The efficacy and broad spectrum of MIR162 make it the most advanced technology available to control the fall army worm, the main insect threat to corn in Brazil. The stacked corn trait Bt11xGA21 offers higher value and convenience for growers through combined insect resistance and herbicide tolerance.

Syngenta May Go For Acquisitions

Syngenta AG said that the company is more optimistic about its prospects for 2010 and sees a return to growth. The company did not rule out making a big acquisition. Syngenta again reiterated that it could consider bidding for Dow Chemical's agricultural sciences unit if it were put up for sale. The company could also consider returning cash to shareholders or go after more acquisitions. Chief Executive of Syngenta Mike Mack said, “Our history also has us sometimes returning cash to shareholders in the years where we're not otherwise competing with growth projects. So we'll take a look at all of those things.”
