StemCells, Inc. (STEM) Wrap Up:

StemCells, Inc. is engaged in the discovery and development of cell-based therapeutics to treat damage to, or degeneration of, major organ systems. Our aim is to restore or support organ function, improve patients’ lives and reduce the substantial health care costs associated with these diseases and disorders by identifying and developing stem and progenitor cells as potential therapeutic agents. We currently have product development programs for two cell types: the human neural stem cell and human liver engrafting cells. In our CNS Program, we are conducting a Phase I clinical trial to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of our HuCNS-SC® product candidate (purified human neural stem cells) as a treatment for infantile and late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL), two forms of a group of disorders often referred to as Batten disease. We have completed enrollment and dosing in this six-patient trial and expect it to be completed in early 2009.  ... StemCells Inc. Announces Initiatives to Advance Cell-Based Technologies for Pharmaceutical Industry and Research Applications

StemCells Inc. announced organizational initiatives focused on growing its specialty SC Proven(R) cell culture product business and advancing the development and commercialization of its central nervous system (CNS) cell-based assay platforms for use in drug screening and drug development. These initiatives reflect the Company's ongoing integration of the operations acquired from Stem Cell Sciences (SCS) Plc in April, and include new personnel appointments and a realignment of activities within the Company's Cambridge, UK and Palo Alto, California locations. The Company is leveraging multiple stem cell technology platforms that include embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells and tissue-derived (adult) stem cells. StemCells will refocus and add to its research and development of cell-based assays, and better align those efforts with its scale-up and manufacturing of cells and assays for drug screening and drug development, including using its automated cell culture platform that enables large-scale production for medium-throughput screening of drug candidates.

Can Stem Cells Put an End To Paralysis?

A successful rodent study showed promise for future treatment of spinal injuries. Menlo Park, California-based Geron Corporation (NASDAQ: GERN - News) is trading higher by 6% today after reporting the results of a recent spinal injury study in rodents. Geron used oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to reduce tissue damage in the rodent model of cervical spinal cord injury - a process that could potentially limit paralysis in humans.According to the press release, over half of the 11,000 human spinal cord injuries in the U.S. each year are in the cervical region (the neck). Geron president and CEO Dr. Thomas B. Okarma, explained, "These preclinical studies demonstrate that transplantation of hESC-derived OPCs resulted in sparing of spinal cord tissue in the cervical lesion site. This sparing starts very soon after injection and importantly, results in the preservation of motor neurons, which is correlated to recovery of forelimb movement."Over the last month, Geron stock remains negative by -11%. Though unimpressive, it is still on par with the Stem Cell Stocks Index, which is trailing the S&P 500 by -14% for the period.StemCells (NASDAQ: ...
