Real Value In Retail And Home Health Care
We can often find value stocks pretty much anywhere in the investment landscape, but occasionally, some industry groups tend to dominate on lists that rank stocks in terms of whether they are selling at prices that underestimate their true "value." That's the case right now with the Portfolio123 "Value Stocks" strategy, which looks for stocks that are more modestly valued than their industry peers on key metrics like price-earnings, price-earnings growth (PEG) and price-sales ratios. The top 25 stocks on these measures are filtered through the Portfolio123 Balanced Fundamentals ranking system. Of the stocks on this week's final list, 18 come from just three groups: retail, health care facilities and computer services.Such concentration is not unusual. As recently as a month ago, health care facilities and retail--two groups that have often been well represented--accounted for a combined eight out of the top 25, and computer services was completely absent. Even the best of models can go haywire every now and then, as seemed to be the case with just about everything investment-related in late 2008, but we haven't been in such a funky period lately.
