Billionaire Igor Olenicoff appears to have much in common with less wealthy Americans who have discovered that hiding money overseas can entail risks--beyond the obvious one of discovery by the Internal Revenue Service.The Orange County, Calif., real estate developer is a convicted felon, having pleaded guilty to lying on his federal tax returns when he failed to disclose huge foreign accounts. Olenicoff paid the feds $52 million in back taxes, interest and civil fraud penalties but avoided prison thanks to good lawyering. Now he is cooperating in the criminal investigation of Swiss banking giant UBS AG's (nyse: UBS - news - people ) role in helping thousands of U.S. taxpayers conceal $20 billion in assets in foreign accounts.But if allegations in the amended civil lawsuit he filed this month are to be believed, Olenicoff was not well served by the personal finance professionals engaged to help him. Among the claims in the 74-page complaint, lodged in federal court in Santa Ana, Calif.: Olenicoff's money handlers, led by ex-UBS banker Bradley Birkenfeld, violated conservative investing instructions, bought dodgy stocks that have since collapsed and hid the positions. The suit also charges those around him secretly collected money at his expense, including a $1.4 million finders fee from a tiny public company that ended up with $5 million of Olenicoff's stash.
