Salix smacks Street with strong 3Q report

Salix Pharmaceuticals posted a wider third quarter loss after markets closed Monday, but the Morrisville-based maker of gastrointestinal drugs easily beat Wall Street projections on the top and bottom lines. Salix (Nasdaq: SLXP) reported a net loss of $7.3 million, or 15 cents per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30. In the year-ago quarter, Salix lost $5.4 million, or 11 cents per share. Revenue leaped 53 percent, to 65.7 million, on the strength of a near doubling in the sales of traveler’s diarrhea treatment Xifaxan, to $42.7 million from $21.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted that Salix would lose 29 cents per share on revenue of $60.42 million. Salix incurred the wider loss due to increased spending related to two drugs – one of which received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for sale during the third quarter. Salix hired 64 salespeople during the quarter to sell Metozolv ODT, a pill designed to treat diabetic gastroparesis and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Research and development expenses nearly doubled, to more than $26 million, as Salix reported positive phase III clinical trials results on the drug rifaximin as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. The company expects to submit a New Drug Application for rifaximin as an IBS treatment in early 2010. Rifaximin already is Salix’s top selling drug. The company sells 200 mg tablets of rifaximin under the trade name Xifaxan for the treatment of traveler’s diarrhea.
