RBC awards teachers and students from the TDSB Vision Program with unique 2010 Olympic Team Torchbearer spot
TORONTO, Nov. 10 /CNW/ - 12 students, and their teachers from the Toronto District School Board's Vision Program, have been selected by RBC through the Canadian Olympic School Program as 2010 Olympic Team Torchbearers. "Our students are honoured to be part of something so extraordinary as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay and we want to thank RBC for this opportunity," said Robin Stewart, Specialist Teacher of the Blind, TDSB. "These students have dedicated themselves to raising awareness in their school communities and the community at large by educating their peers and teachers about visual impairment, blindness, braille, and their amazing abilities. Despite a myriad of logistical obstacles they have come together with the common goal of breaking down the barriers imposed upon them through communication and understanding. I am proud and excited to share this experience with them."Through the Canadian Olympic School Program, which brings the Olympic Spirit to classrooms across Canada, RBC provided teachers, coaches and school leaders the opportunity to help create a better Canada by working with their students to submit a team pledge that chronicled how they were going to improve their community, be more environmentally-friendly, or live healthier lifestyles. RBC and the Canadian Olympic Committee reviewed the pledges received from across the country and have awarded 16 teams of 20 students and teachers with the opportunity to be 2010 Olympic Team Torchbearers. Each team will collectively carry the Olympic Flame for one kilometre during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute student, Ramya Amuthan, wrote part of the Vision Program's pledge in the form of an essay entitled "Let's Find Common Ground." The students believe reaching this "common ground" between us is what will help make a better pl...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)

Raymond Garneau, former Quebec finance minister, to carry the 2010 Olympic Flame in December
MONTREAL, Nov. 12 /CNW Telbec/ - Raymond Garneau, former Quebec finance minister, has accepted RBC's invitation to be a 2010 Olympic Torchbearer when the Olympic Flame comes to Candiac on December 8, 2009. "I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to carry the torch, because I was closely involved with the financing of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games when I was Quebec's finance minister," Mr. Garneau explained. "It's a great personal honour that reminds me of the unique experience we've been through, 33 years ago."Many of the 2010 Olympic Torchbearers, notably in the Montreal area, have been selected by RBC following a contest held earlier this year. The lucky winners were selected on the strength of their community involvement, such as their work in protecting the environment or with a charitable organization.Mr. Garneau has worked as volunteer president of the Montreal Cancer Institute (ICM) for the past six years. ICM is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help fund cancer research and provide scholarships to pave the way for up-and-coming researchers in this field. In 2007, Mr. Garneau launched a benefit concert series, called "Concerts Against Cancer," which has helped finance a new program to combat the brain drain."I will be pleased to donate the Olympic Torch I will carry on December 8 to the ICM so that it may be sold at the silent auction following the 'Concert Against Cancer' event at Place des Arts on February 5, 2010," added Mr. Garneau. The Olympic Flame will make its journey across Quebec, primarily between November 29 and December 12, 2009.Approximately 12,000 Canadians will carry the flame across the country with millions more cheering and supporting them. The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay began its journey to Vancouver on October 30, 2009, when the flame arrived in British Columbia following a t...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)

Canadians struggle to put their money where their priorities are: RBC Poll
Twice as many boomers say homeownership is a financial priority compared to a year ago TORONTO, Nov. 17 /CNW/ - Canadians say their top three financial priorities are retirement savings (50 per cent), homeownership (47 per cent) and regular payments to reduce or eliminate debt (41 per cent), but not everyone puts their money where their priorities are, according to the RBC Financial Priorities Poll. Nearly half of Canadians with home ownership as a priority (47 per cent) don't put money towards it. Four-in-ten of those with retirement savings as a priority don't put money towards this goal. Canadians were more successful with their debt reduction, with eight-in-ten putting money toward this priority."We have so many complex and competing financial priorities today that it's hard to stay focused," said Lee Anne Davies, head, Retirement Strategies, RBC. "That's the main driver behind half of Canadians saying they need financial planning help."Financial priorities have changed over the past year. More than twice as many Canadian boomers (aged 55 and over) named home ownership as a financial priority compared to a year ago (44 per cent versus 20 per cent from the RBC RRSP Poll conducted in October 2008). Among Canadians aged 35 to 54, home ownership grew in importance, with 44 per cent stating it as a financial priority, compared to 30 per cent in fall 2008."More boomers than you would think are struggling to balance home ownership with retirement savings as financial priorities," said Davies. "A financial advisor can help ensure your plan addresses both priorities and considers the additional financial obligations that come along with owning a home."Although money issues always accompany major life events like job loss, retirement or marriage, many Canadians (58 per cent) find the emotional impact of these events ...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)
