RWE AG announced earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. The company reported larger than expected year-on-year declines in operating profit and recurrent after tax profit. Third-quarter net profit nearly halved due in part to the RWE Supply & Trading failing to match its prior year result. Net profit in the three months to September 30, 2009 fell to EUR 569 million from EUR 1.06 billion a year earlier. The company's closely watched operating profit for the quarter fell 22% to EUR 1.45 billion compared with EUR 1.86 billion a year earlier. Third-quarter revenue dropped around 4% to EUR 9.11 billion from EUR 9.47 billion, reflecting a recession related decline in energy demand. For the first nine months of 2009, the company reported recurrent after-tax profit declined 7% on the year to EUR 2.87 billion. The power generation and energy trading business will make up the shortfall in the fourth quarter of 2009. The company added that it expects Essent to contribute around EUR 1.5 billion in revenue and around EUR 100 million in operating profit in the fourth quarter of 2009. The company reiterated its 2009 full-year outlook for stable earnings. For the full-year recurrent after-tax profit which strips out non-operating results, major items in the financial results, income taxes and income from discontinued operations is also expected to match the EUR 3.37 billion achieved last year.
