PNC exec turns down BofA offer
Bank of America Corp. for the second time this month has approached a high-ranking executive at a banking institution with deep Pittsburgh ties concerning the top job at the nation's largest bank, only to be turned down. The Wall Street Journal said a Bank of America recruiter approached William Demchak, PNC Financial Services Group Inc. senior vice chairman, about replacing Kenneth Lewis. The Bank of America CEO is retiring Dec. 31. The Journal said a major reason why Demchak spurned the recruiter was because any compensation package at Bank of America must be approved by the Obama administration's pay czar, Kenneth Feinberg. "We don't comment on rumors or speculation," said PNC spokesman Fred Solomon, who refused to confirm if the 46-year-old Demchak had been approached by Bank of America. "We have no comment on potential candidates, can't speculate on an announcement timetable, but can say the process is continuing," said Bank of America spokesman T.J. Crawford. Bove said PNC twice in recent times has bailed out the federal government, first with the takeover of Riggs National Bank in Washington, which he called a "disaster," and most recently with the takeover of National City Corp. "Why would Demchak leave a desirable job with a good company with a good relationship with the federal government and journey into the bowels of hell?" Bove said. Two weeks ago, Bank of New York Mellon Corp. CEO Ro...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)
