Key developments for News Corp (NWS)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. is looking for a buyer. The company announced on November 13, 2009 that it has begun to explore strategic options including a potential sale of the company. In a statement, MGM also said that, its lenders have agreed to grant the company another respite until January 31 from interest payments on nearly $4 billion in debt. It is also learnt that, financial adviser Moelis & Co. is expected to send out non-disclosure agreements and detailed financial information to interested parties by early next week. Potential buyers include, Time Warner Inc. and News Corp. On November 12, 2009 Lions Gate Entertainment Corp’s Vice Chairman Michael Burns, also said his company was interested in taking a look. “They have fantastic franchises like James Bond; they have half of `The Hobbit.' Of course it's interesting to us,” Burns said.
A former editor has resurrected the episode as the basis of a lawsuit she has filed against the News Corp. Sandra Guzman claims she was fired last year over complaints she made about the cartoon particularly, and about 'pervasive racism and sexism' at the Post generally. The lawsuit said Guzman, the 'only female editor of color at the Post ,' was among those who complained about a February 18 cartoon that depicted a policeman shooting a crazed chimpanzee, a play on an actual incident in Connecticut. A spokeswoman for the newspaper said Guzman's position was eliminated when Tempo , a monthly insert she edited, was closed as advertising sales in the newspaper industry declined. But according to the lawsuit, Guzman worked for the newspaper for six years and had received strong performance reviews as recently as July. She is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, including for emotional distress and harm to her career.
News Corp. provided earnings guidance for fiscal year 2010. The company said its annual operating income was now expected to grow in the high single to low double-digits above its fiscal 2009 adjusted result.
