Key developments for Novartis AG (NVSEF)
Novartis AG plans to launch its diabetes treatment, Galvus (vildagliptin), onto the Japanese market as early as 2010. During the first six months of this year, Galvus garnered worldwide sales revenues of some $65 million and the company is expecting the drug to rake in annual global sales of over $1 billion, added the source.
Novartis AG announced that it has published interim data related to its swine flu vaccine from the U.S. Interim clinical data from approximately 4,000 individuals suggest that half a dose of the currently U.S.-approved Novartis unadjuvanted Influenza A(H1N1) 2009 vaccine met immunogenicity criteria in adults and the elderly. Data also show that Novartis MF59 adjuvant was well tolerated and could potentially quadruple the Novartis A(H1N1) 2009 influenza vaccine supply. MF59 adjuvant has an established safety profile supported by clinical data from more than 33,000 study participants and 12 years of real life safety data with more than 45 million doses of influenza vaccine administered since 1997 in Europe.
Novartis AG has temporarily ceased its R&D operations in India. Since four years, the company has been fighting a legal dispute in India for its cancer medicine, Glivec. The company has failed to receive a patent for Glivec from the Bombay and Madras High Courts which made the company to move to the Supreme Court. Currently, the company is planning to invest $1 billion in China and market Glivec in China. The company maintained that its recent investment in China is not because of the negative court decision on Glivec in India.
