Novell Inc. and SAP AG have expanded their existing global partnership to include the delivery of integrated governance, risk, and compliance(GRC) solutions. The companies are cooperating on product integration and planning to collaborate on joint go-to-market activities and alignment of strategic direction related to GRC solutions. This includes integration of GRC solutions from the SAP Business Objects portfolio with Novell security and identity products, as well as plans for joint marketing and selling of the integrated solutions to joint customers. The combination of GRC offerings from SAP and Novell-currently available and planned-will bridge the gap between business processes and IT security and controls. Together, SAP and Novell deliver to customers agility, transparency and accountability with a combined GRC offering that supports end-to-end business processes and IT environments, providing quick time-to-value with certified integration and targeted solution offerings. Novell Inc. announced that Russell Poole, former vice president and senior HR partner, has been named senior vice president, Human Resources, effective immediately. Poole will be based out of the company's headquarters in Waltham, Mass., and will report directly to President and CEO Ron Hovsepian. Poole takes over for acting Senior Vice President of Human Resources Scott Semel. Semel continues his role as senior vice president and general counsel at the company. Prior to joining the company, Poole served in the company's Law department as Vice President, Law-People. He has also held various supervisory and management positions within the consulting and oil and gas industries, where over a 25-year period he evaluated, managed and resolved human resources, employment, benefit, tax and transactional issues.

Los Angeles OKs plan to use Google Web services
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- City Council members tentatively approved a multimillion-dollar proposal Tuesday to tap Google Inc. for government e-mail and other Internet services, a boon for the Web giant as it seeks to wrest market share for office software from rival Microsoft Corp. The Council voted unanimously for the $7.2 million deal with contractor Computer Sciences Corp. to replace many city computer systems with the so-called Google Apps services.An amendment added shortly before the vote makes the contract contingent on Computer Science agreeing to pay a preset penalty if a security breach occurs. The contractor's project manager David Barber said he believed such an agreement would be reached.The city's police officers' union and privacy advocates had raised security concerns over the Google contract because it places data online rather than on individual computers under the city's direct control.Under the deal, Google will provide e-mail, calendar, online chatting and other services to 30,000 city employees.The Council chose Google's offer over competing bids from Microsoft and more than a dozen other technology firms eager to score the nation's second second-largest city as a client.The move will also end the city's 7-year contract to use Novell Inc.'s GroupWise e-mail and record-keeping software, which city workers have complained is slow and crash-prone.Novell senior vice president said during the Council hearing that many city departments were not using the most recent version of GroupWise and reiterated an offer to provide additional services for free."The titans are fighting, and they all want our attention," said Councilman Tony Cardenas, who sponsored the legislation granting the contract to Google.The vote came amid a push by Mountain View-based Google to market its "cloud computing" s...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)

The recession has cast a bright light on the tactics used by Big Software companies to lock in their customers through multi-year license agreements. In these agreements, annual fees go up, but can almost never be reduced--even if the customer's business has downsized.Big Software's strategies involve discount structures that lead to "shelfware" and renewal traps, combined with additional charges for things like moving software between entities, using current hardware or getting access to the customer's own data over the Internet. It's an art that has been fine-tuned for four decades--and it's made a lot of people very rich. It's still happening, even in an improving but deeply troubled market.
