Defense in fraud trial highlights legitimate deals
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A cousin of Tom Petters testified in the Minnesota businessman's fraud trial Monday that they worked on a multitude of real deals involving real merchandise such as home entertainment systems, other electronics and clothing. The defense called Karl Petters as one of its first witnesses in an attempt to show that Petters Co. Inc., the company prosecutors say was at the heart of a $3.65 billion Ponzi scheme, was a legitimate business -- at least in its early years.Karl Petters, of Austin, Texas, testified he was involved in a 1996 deal in which PCI bought thousands of home entertainment systems from 3M Co., which was getting out of that business. Karl Petters, who is not charged with a crime, said PCI sold the majority of them to Sam's Club for about $5 million. An IRS agent testifying for the prosecution told the jury earlier Monday that money flowed into PCI mostly from hedge funds plus some individual investors, including Minnesota business figures Ted Deikel and Dean Vlahos. Special Agent Kathy Klug said almost none of it from 2003 to 2008 went to buy electronic merchandise as the investors were told.Instead, Klug said the vast majority of the more than $38 billion that flowed through PCI's accounts in those years went to pay off previous investments, while $83 million went into Petters' personal accounts and $315 million went to subsidize his other businesses, such as Polaroid and Sun Country Airlines. The defense agrees that a Ponzi scheme existed, but claims it was carried out by other defendants close to Petters without his knowledge. His lawyers also claim Petters paid less attention to PCI because he was distracted after the murder of his son John, in Italy in 2005, and focused on his new acquisitions instead.Tom Petters' father-in-law, John Hagen, testified that Petters was devastated by...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)

1 “It’s In Your Hands” “Recommended Practices for Hand Hygiene in the Perioperative Setting,” and through new and creative programs will engage and recognize nurses from around the country for exemplary hand hygiene compliance. The campaign will include a YouTube video contest in which nurses will demonstrate the updated hand hygiene protocols through short videos, as well as a recognition program for those who have gone above and beyond to lead their organizations in reducing HAIs through good hand hygiene practices.“Proper hand hygiene remains one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent and control healthcare-associated infections,” said Linda Groah, RN MSN CNOR FAAN, Executive Director/CEO of AORN. “This partnership with 3M reinforces hand hygiene standards by helping to creatively inform nurses who are on the front lines of surgical care and give them tools to inform and engage their peer groups.”2 The practices outline recommended procedures, protocols and evaluation methods for hand hygiene. Included are recommendations for products that include alcohol-based antiseptic hand rub with documented persistent (or prolonged antimicrobial activity) and cumulative (progressive decrease of microorganisms over time) activity that has met U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulatory requirements for surgical hand antisepsis.Recommended Practices for Hand Hygiene in the Perioperative Setting.”“It’s In Your Hands” YouTube Video Contest and Peer Recognition ProgramsTo engage nurses and provide a creative vehicle to visu...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--3M’S Optical Systems Division today announced that it has launched a consumer awareness campaign in an effort to raise awareness of household TV energy consumption and what to consider when purchasing an energy efficient TV. Specifically, the company is hoping to provide valuable information to consumers through the media to educate the public about energy efficient TVs and the issues surrounding TV power consumption in the home. 12. With the holiday sales season kicking off this month, it is the ideal time for consumers to learn about energy efficient TVs. The simplest way to look for an energy efficient TV is to visit the ® ® label in stores.“In the U.S., consumers lack awareness and knowledge about advancements in TV energy efficiency, and how the decisions they make when shopping for a new TV could greatly reduce their power bills and leave less of a carbon footprint on our planet. Moreover, it’s also difficult for consumers to determine which TVs are the most energy efficient,” noted Jim Bauman, vice president of 3M’s Optical Systems Division. “Fortunately, today there is a wide range of energy efficient TV technologies available, allowing consumers to reduce energy consumption in their TVs without sacrificing picture quality.”...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)
