Lightwave Logic, Inc. announced that Dr. Phillips W. Smith, PhD, was appointed to Lightwave's board of directors and will also serve as its chair. Dr. Smith has over 35 years of experience with high technology companies serving as both chief executive officer and chairman, and in corporate officer positions at three Fortune 500 Companies. Lightwave also announced that Thomas Smith has resigned from the Lightwave board of directors, but will continue to serve the company as a consultant.

Lightwave Logic, Inc. announced an agreement with the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa to conduct cooperative development, analytical testing, optimization, and scale-up of its proprietary materials platform. The company believes that the agreement will help shorten the time to market for its new Polymeric Electro-Optic materials (Third Order materials where light is used to switch light), covered with its sixth patent application reported on previously. Separately, the company noted that work is continuing on the development of its initial amplitude modulator for the optical computer market. Additional phase modulators for telecommunications applications are also progressing, and updated reports are expected within the first quarter.

Lightwave Logic, Inc. announced that independent verification of earlier reported test results of its proprietary materials has been completed. The company first reported remarkable r33 results for its family of electro-optic materials in 2006. Those results showed that one of its materials exhibited an r33 value, the benchmark figure for electro-optic activity, 700% higher of an earlier standard material. Since that time, the company resynthesized its materials, prepared new test chips, and resubmitted them for testing by Dr. C.C. Teng and for independent testing by optical scientists at Photon-X. This new set of independent testing data has completely verified the earlier testing results. High values of r33 translate into low power usage and low switching voltages for devices such as modulators built using its material.
