Bumped? Blame the Government
"I'd like this bag sent to London, this bag to Los Angeles, and this bag to Paris," the man standing at the American Airlines check-in counter at New York's JFK Airport told the airline's representative. "But you're flying direct to Barcelona," the representative protested. "Well, you managed to do it last week," the customer replied. That joke was a favorite of my late grandfather, though anyone who has had his luggage lost by an airline would find it less amusing. Airlines and airports give consumers plenty of reasons to complain--whether it's a delayed takeoff, no blankets while the air-conditioning is on at full blast or a television screen that doesn't work. But the worst of all is being involuntarily bumped. It's an annoyance if your bag misses the first night of your vacation; it's a disaster if you do. Today's bumping rate is the highest it's been in 14 years, according to official statistics. I recently took six flights in a month, and all were overbooked. On four of them I was asked if I would voluntarily take the next plane. At least I had a choice: A couple of months ago my parents and siblings were told by British Airways that they had no choice but to accept compensation and take a flight the next morning. Some people don't mind getting bumped. If you're not in a rush, getting some cash or vouchers or a free future flight can be appealing. But for others, such as my family, no matter what British Airways could offer, it wouldn't make up for missing a day of a short family reunion. Getting bumped is a strange phenomenon. It doesn't happen with other tickets people purchase. I've yet to hear of a case where someone bought a ticket to see The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and showed up only to be told her seat was double-booked and she had to see a show the next day. No other (legitimate) businesses sell the same product to more than one customer, so why do airlines?Simply put: Because the government says they...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)
