As of January 31, 2009, the company operated approximately 2,481 supermarkets and multi-department stores under two dozen banners, including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith?s, Fry?s, Fry?s Marketplace, Dillons, QFC, and City Market, of which 781 stores had fuel centers, as well as operated approximately 771 convenience stores and 385 fine jewelry stores. As part of a previously announced $75 million investment in the upgrading of stores in Ft. Wayne, Ind., Kroger Co. opened a fueling center at a Scott's Food & Pharmacy store. The company plans to open 10 fuel centers in the market within the next three years. Kroger offers a 10-cent discount on fuel for every $100 spent in store. The Scott's fuel center, the first under the Scott's banner, is also the first fuel center in Kroger's Central Division to have a handicap service button at every pump.
Three former Ralphs executives are suing Ralphs Grocery Company and Kroger Co., alleging that the companies wrongfully terminated and scapegoated them after the bitter 2003-04 Southern California supermarket strike and lockout. The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, comes after the trio: Patrick McGowan, a former Ralphs regional vice president, and Scott Drew and Karen Montoya, former zone managers were acquitted in June of fraud and conspiracy in a scheme to rehire locked-out workers using fake Social Security numbers during the strike. The strike and lockout involved Ralphs, a division of Kroger Co., and rival chains Vons and Albertsons. The suit, which asks for compensation, also named Kroger division Fry's Food Stores.
Kroger Co. announced the appointment of Kathleen S. Barclay as Senior Vice President, Human Resources. Ms. Barclay joins the company after heading Global Human Resources for General Motors Corporation for more than ten years. Ms. Barclay's background includes nearly 30 years of progressive responsibilities in the Human Resources field. In her role as Senior Vice President at Kroger, she will be responsible for leading all aspects of Human Resources for the nation's traditional grocery retailer.
