Konica Minolta Holdings Inc. announced that it will spend JPY 3.5 billion to build a facility in Japan to produce organic electroluminescence devices for lighting equipment. The company will start construction of the facility for small-scale production in Hino, Tokyo, in November, 2009 for completion in autumn 2010. The company plans to commercialize the new light source during fiscal 2010 starting next April and establish technologies to start mass production of the product in fiscal 2013. By fiscal 2017, the company aims to achieve sales of some JPY 100 billion in OEL product business. Production of the light source will utilize its roll-to-roll method that coats a roll of plastic film with organic compounds. The technology, which derived from its photographic film manufacturing process, is more efficient than the conventional method, in which organic compounds are deposited onto glass substrates, and is capable of making flexible OEL film.
