Xstrata Dulls Steel Outlook

Monday's decision by Xstrata to cut back on the production of ferrochrome--a key material used in the making of stainless steel--indicates that the year ahead will be troublesome for the global stainless steel industry and those who supply it. Shares across the European mining sector dropped on Monday after Xstrata and its ferrochrome joint-venture partner Merafe Resources said they had suspended production on five furnaces, just three weeks after halting six others, due to "short-term weakness in demand." The move nearly halves their total annual ferrochrome production capacity, taking it down to 906,000 tons, from 1.8 million tons before the first cut, and 1.3 million before the second. "The move shows how bad stainless steel demand is," said Evolution Securities analyst Charles Cooper. He added that more cuts could be expected not only from other ferrochrome producers, but also from other suppliers to the stainless steel industry, such as coking coal and nickel producers. With 70.0% of global ferrochrome production directed towards stainless steel making, it is also an indicator of the devastating impact that the slump in the global economy is having on that industry. "We have seen big slowdowns in the United States and Europe, but even in China, the level of housing sales around Beijing has slowed dramatically and construction is tanking," said Cooper, adding that stainless steel makers in China were reportedly sitting on large stocks of goods and consumers of ferrochrome were cancelling orders. Shares of Zug, Switzerland-based (other-otc: XSRAY - news - people ) slid 7.1%, or 1.20 Swiss fran...
