International Paper Co. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. For the quarter, the company reported net earnings attributable to the company was $371 million or $0.87 per diluted common share on net sales of $5,919 million compared to net earnings attributable to the company was $149 million or $0.35 per diluted common share on net sales of $6,808 million in the same period of previous year. Earnings from continuing operations before income taxes and equity earnings was $589 million against $265 million in the same period of last year. Earnings from continuing operations was $377 million or $0.87 per diluted common share compared to earnings from continuing operations of $152 million or $0.35 per diluted common share in the same period of previous year. The company generated $1.3 billion of free cash flow (cash provided by operations less capital expenditures) during the quarter, reflecting its continued focus on reducing costs, managing capacity and working capital, and continued reduced capital spending, as well as cash received from alternative fuel mixture credits. For the nine months ended September 30, 2009, the company reported net earnings attributable to the company was $764 million or $1.79 per diluted common share on net sales of $17,389 million compared to net earnings attributable to the company was $509 million or $1.20 per diluted common share on net sales of $18,283 million in the same period of previous year. Earnings from continuing operations before income taxes and equity earnings was $1,627 million against $765 million in the same period of last year. Earnings from continuing operations was $778 million or $1.79 per diluted common share compared to earnings from continuing operations of $542 million or $1.24 per diluted common share in the same period of previous year. Cash provided by operations was $3,570 million against $1,956 million in the same period of last year. Invested in capital projects was $367 million against $732 million in the same period of last year.
