H.J. Heinz issues progress report on sustainability efforts

H.J. Heinz Co. (NYSE:HNZ) is well on its way to reaching companywide sustainability goals, according to its 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, released today. The Pittsburgh-based food manufacturer is aiming for a 20 percent reduction in each of the following categories by 2015: greenhouse gas emissions, solid waste production, energy use and water consumption. So far the company has seen: These results are a culmination of a number of initiatives, said company spokesman Michael Mullen, not the least of which is encouraging 33,000 employees worldwide to pitch in by remembering to turn off lights and computers or encouraging the use of reusable containers. In North America, the company studied plant operations and implemented a series of projects in fiscal year 2008-09 that included factory lighting upgrades, boiler/steam optimization, air compressor system upgrades, refrigeration controls system upgrades, process heat recovery, water reclamation and waste recycling, according to the report. “Not only is it good for the environment, it is also good for Heinz,” Mullen said about the sustainability effort. Many of the company’s environmentally friendly programs also save money. Mullen declined to give an exact amount but said the company’s investment in sustainability has saved millions of dollars. “Through this global initiative and other programs that are highlighted in our CSR Report, Heinz is demonstrating that we are a socially responsible company dedicated to the sustainable health of people and the planet,” Chairman, President and CEO William R.
