Hitachi Chemical Co. Ltd. provided earnings guidance for the year ending March 31, 2010. For the period, the company forecast net sales of JPY 445,000 million. Operating income of JPY 34,000 million. Net income of JPY 20,000 million and net income/share of JPY 96.04.

A consortium of 13 companies, including Sharp Corporation and JSR Corp. announced that it has developed a way to make flexible LCDs by using plastic film instead of glass substrates. LCDs currently used in cellular phones and televisions are not bendable because they are made out of glass substrates. Using several layers of plastic film for displaying colors can be an alternative. But positioning each layer has proved difficult. The Technology Research Association for Advanced Display Materials developed a high-precision production technique for combining color filters and other types of thin film. A prototype 3.5-inch LCD that is just 0.49mm thick and weighs only 7 grams successfully displayed a color image. This production method involves fewer processes compared with making LCD panels using glass substrates, so producers will be able to reduce equipment at their factories. Energy consumption for panel production can be slashed by about 75%, and carbon dioxide emissions can be cut by more than 70%. Other members include Hitachi Chemical Co. Sumitomo Chemical Co.and Kuraray Co.
