Grupo Mexico SA de CV and unionized workers at US-based copper miner-smelter Asarco have agreed to extend the current labor contract for one year. The collective bargaining agreement will now expire on June 30, 2011. Last December, Grupo Mxico concluded the restructuring of Asarco, awarded to the holding company by a bankruptcy court in Texas.
A Mexican court has ruled in favor of dissolving the labor contract between workers at the Cananea copper mine and Grupo Mexico SA de CV official ending the more than two-and-half-year strike. Grupo Mxico asked the court to intervene because of force majeure due to damage to water and electrical systems, and other control mechanisms in the mine that occurred during the strike.
