Europe Tense As Rates Fall

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and Bank of England boss Mervyn King left Europe's investors subdued Thursday morning, with a 50 basis-point cut in Britain coming in as expected and a similar cut expected in the euro zone later in the day. Pressure has also grown on central bankers to bring out other tools to spur economic growth.The Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 index fell 1.4%, to 1,915.94 points, with auto stocks and technology companies down more than 3.0%. The Dutch AEX index fell more than 3.0%, with benchmarks in Ireland and Italy down more than 2.0%.German government notes had an erratic session, with prices ticking up for three-month, six-month and one-year bonds, while three-year, five-year and seven-year bonds actually fell by between one and three euro cents. British Treasury bond prices rose across the board, with the one-year note rising 7 pence, to 105.02 pounds ($148.12), and the three-year bond up 13 pence, to 109.35 pounds ($154.23).Economists expected the Bank of England to cut interest rates to 0.5%, from 1.0%, on Thursday, which is exactly what was announced, while the ECB is expected to cut rates to 1.5%, from 2.0% later in the day. Despite the gap in rates, a deepening recession is pressuring both institutions. Data for the last three months of 2008 showed how the 16-member euro zone's economy had declined 1.5% quarter-on-quarter, or exactly the same rate as Britain's drop in the same quarter.Preliminary retail sales data from Germany also showed an unexpected drop of 0.6% in January, whereas analysts had forecasted a rise of 0.2%.
