Key developments for Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica SA (GCTAY)
Gamesa Corporación Tecnológica S.A. has named Dirk Matthys as chief executive officer of its entire North America presence including all manufacturing and development operations. Mr. Matthys joined the company in July 2009 initially heading up North America turbine sales operations after two decades in the steel industry and most recently with ArcelorMittal. From May 2005 through 2008, Mr. Matthys was CEO and country manager of Arcelor China and later of ArcelorMittal China.
Gamesa Corporación Tecnológica S.A. announced that Guillermo Ulacia, has resigned as president and board member. Ulacia, who cited strictly personal reasons for his resignation, will be replaced by Jorge Calvet Spinatsch. Until now, Calvet occupied the vice-presidency at the company's board of directors. He took up that position in 2007, two years after he joined Gamesa's board as an independent member. His professional background is primarily in investment banking in New York, London and Madrid, where he held positions in Morgan Stanley, UBS and Fortis.
Suzlon Energy Limited is in talks with a group of wind equipment component manufacturers in Belgium, in addition to some leading turbine manufacturers in Europe, such as Vestas Wind Systems A/S, to sell Hansen Transmissions International NV. The company hopes to raise about $1 billion from the sale of a 61.28% stake, said two banking sources. Suzlon is examining four proposals and the deal could be completed within a month or two. At present, Vestas and a Belgium-based consortium of major wind component makers are the frontrunners for Hansen, which has manufacturing assets in India, China and Belgium, said sources. Sources said Cockerill Maintenance & Ingénierie S.A., Owens Corning, Pauwels International N.V. and Power Climber BVBA are the major wind component manufacturers in Belgium referred to. “German firm Winenergy AG, Suzlon’s largest supplier of gearboxes, was also considering buying Hansen. But their current stand is not clear,” said a banker. Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica, S.A. had earlier said the company was not in the fray to acquire Hansen. A Suzlon spokesperson refused to comment. Sources said the sale of Hansen would not affect the gearbox requirements of Suzlon. One of the main aspects of the discussions includes continuation of Hansen as a supplier of gearboxes for Suzlon.
