FARMERS & MERCHANTS BANCORP Files SEC form 10-K, Annual Report

Item 7. Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations Overview The Company's primary service area encompasses the northern Central Valley of California, a region that can be significantly impacted by the seasonal needs of the agricultural industry. Accordingly, discussion of the Company's Financial Condition and Results of Operations is influenced by the seasonal banking needs of its agricultural customers (e.g., during the spring and summer customers draw down their deposit balances and increase loan borrowing to fund the purchase of equipment and planting of crops. Correspondingly, deposit balances are replenished and loans repaid in late fall and winter as crops are harvested and sold). The Five Year Period: 2004 through 2008 The following table presents key performance data for the Company over the past five years. (1) Prior years have been restated for stock dividends issued in 2004 through 2005. No stock dividend was issued in 2006 through 2008. (2) Not including cash paid in lieu of fractional shares related to stock dividends. These payments totaled $497,000 between 2004 and 2005. During the five-year period 2004 through 2008, the Company's operating performance improved every year. · Annual net income increased 38.5% to $22.8 million from $16.5 million. · Earnings Per Share increased 45.8% to $28.69 from $19.68. · Total assets increased 37.3% to $1.68 billion. · Total loans increased 35.8% to $1.18 billion. · Total deposits increased 43.0% to $1.43 billion Table of Contents For many banks, the growth they experienced over the past five years "caught-up-to-them" in 2008 when significant credit quality problems surfaced that resulted in declining profits or even losses. This was not the case for Farmers & Merchants Bancorp. During 2008: · The Company reported its 11th consecutive year of earnings growth a...
