Key developments for Devon Energy Corporation (DVN)
Devon Energy Corp intends to divest its Gulf of Mexico and international assets. The company plans to concentrate on its onshore fields in the United States and Canada. The company hopes to raise after-tax proceeds of $4.5 billion to $7.5 billion from the divestures. The sale process will begin in the first quarter of 2010 and is likely to be concluded by the end of 2010, the company said. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Larry Nichols said: "We do not believe that the value of our high-quality Gulf and international assets is being adequately reflected in our stock price." Devon owns more than 9 million acres in international assets. Most of the properties are undeveloped and are in Azerbaijan, Russia, Brazil and China. Devon holds nearly 1.5 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico, of which about 87% is undeveloped. The company has 662 producing wells and has stake in some of the region's best potential plays in the newly discovered in the deepwater "lower tertiary" trend.
Devon Energy Corporation announced the results of a successful Haynesville Shale well in San Augustine County, Texas. The Kardell Gas Unit 1H achieved an average continuous 24-hour flow rate of approximately 30.7 million cubic feet of natural gas equivalent per day through a 37/64-inch choke. Flowing pressure was 6,824 pounds per square inch. The Kardell well was drilled to a total measured depth of 18,350 feet, including a horizontal lateral section of approximately 4,500 feet.

Devon Energy to Sell International, Gulf of Mexico Assets
By BEN CASSELMAN andJASON WOMACK Devon Energy Corp. plans to sell all of its assets in the Gulf of Mexico and overseas next year in order to focus on its onshore North American operations. The surprise move is the latest sign of how lower energy prices are making it harder for smaller oil companies such as Devon to compete with global giants like Exxon Mobil Corp. and BP PLC on big offshore projects. Oklahoma City-based Devon expects to bring in between $4.5 billion and $7.5 billion from the sale of its operations in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and in Brazil, China and Azerbaijan. The company expects to complete the sales by the end of 2010. Most of the projects Devon is selling are high-risk, high-reward offshore fields, which could hold huge amounts of oil and gas but will require billions of dollars and take years to develop. That put a strain on Devon, which is large for a so-called independent oil company but is a tenth the size of Exxon by market capitalization.Devon has found itself with less money to spend, largely because natural-gas prices have dropped nearly 30% over the last 52 weeks. On Thursday, natural gas settled at $4.614 per million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Despite having less cash, Devon can't easily dial back spending on the long-term offshore projects, because their budgets are set years in advance. So the company has had to devote a bigger share of its spending to its offshor...Click here to read the whole Article (external link)
