DTE Energy Company engages in the electric and natural gas utility businesses in Michigan. It operates in three segments: Electric Utility, Gas Utility, and Non-Utility Operations. The Electric Utility segment engages in the generation, purchase, distribution, and sale of electricity for residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers. It generates electricity from fossil plants, hydroelectric pumped storage plant, and nuclear plants, as well as purchases electricity from electricity generators, suppliers, and wholesalers. The Gas Utility segment engages in the purchase, storage, transmission, distribution, and sale of natural gas for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. It offers gas sales, end user transportation, intermediate transportation, and gas storage services. The Non-Utility Operations segment involves in the gas pipelines and storage; unconventional gas exploration, development, and production; coal transportation and marketing; energy marketing and trading operations; and power and industrial projects that deliver energy and utility-type services, including pulverized coal, petroleum coke and metallurgical coke supply, power generation, steam production, chilled water production, wastewater treatment, and compressed air supply to steel, automotive, industrial, commercial, and institutional customers. As of December 31, 2008, the company owned 30,612 circuit miles of overhead and 14,913 circuit miles of underground electric distribution lines; natural gas distribution system of approximately 19,000 miles of distribution mains, approximately 1,181,000 service lines, and approximately 1,324,000 active meters; approximately 2,000 miles of transmission lines; 4 carbon dioxide processing facilities; and properties relating to 4 underground natural gas storage fields with an aggregate working gas storage capacity of approximately 132 Bcf. DTE Energy Co. reported un-audited consolidated earnings results fort the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. The company reported third quarter 2009 earnings of $158 million, or $0.96 per diluted share, compared with $177 million, or $1.08 per diluted share, in the third quarter of 2008. Operating earnings for the third quarter 2009 were $157 million, or $0.95 per diluted share, compared with third quarter 2008 operating earnings of $173 million, or $1.06 per diluted share. Operating revenues were $1,961 million against $2,338 million of previous year period. Operating income was $343 million compared to $375 million, for the same period last year. Income before income taxes was $231 million against $267 million, for the comparable period last year. The company's reported earnings for the nine months ended September 30, 2009, were $419 million or $2.55 per diluted share, versus $417 million or $2.55 per diluted share in 2008. Reported earnings in 2008 included $0.50 per share related to the sale of a portion of the company's Barnett Shale natural gas property. Year-to-date operating earnings were $427 million or $2.61 per diluted share, compared with $329 million or $2.00 per diluted share in 2008. Operating revenues were $5,904 million against $7,159 million of previous year period. Operating income was $953 million compared to $961 million for the same period last year. Income before income taxes was $618 million against $632 million for the comparable period last year.
DTE Energy Co. revised earnings guidance for the year 2009. For the period, the company increased earnings guidance as the company's continuous improvement program, one-time cost reductions, strong results from its non-utility operations and holding company tax benefits have contributed to stronger performance. Operating earnings per share are expected in the $3.20 to $3.40 range, up from the previously stated $2.75 to $3.05.
