Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2009. For the quarter, the company's operating profit improved significantly to $70.6 million, compared with operating losses of $47.0 million from the same period in 2008. Net sales were $803 million, an increase of $9 million from the prior year. Net income attributable to company was $47 million, a $102 million improvement from a loss attributable to company of $55 million in 2008. The company reported net income of 77 cents per share on a diluted basis compared to 94 cents diluted per share for the same period a year ago. Income from continuing operations were $57.8 million or 77 cents diluted per share compared to loss from continuing operations was $54.8 million or 0.94 cents diluted per share for the same period a year ago. The positive results during the quarter were the outcome of successfully executing on the company's plan in an environment where a positive price to raw material relationship existed For the nine months, the company has posted net sales of $2,005.9 million compared to $2,245.97 million for the same period a year ago. Operating income was $95.9 million compared to operating loss of $52.8 million for the same period a year ago. Income from continuing operations were $65.6 million or 84 cents diluted per share compared to loss from continuing operations was $73.0 million or 128 cents diluted per share for the same period a year ago. Net income attributable to company was $12.6 million or 21 cents diluted per share compared to loss income attributable to company was $75.9 million or 128 cents diluted per share for the same period a year ago. Improved results were driven by lower raw material costs and supported by the company's continued manufacturing improvements and improved utilization of capacity. These positive impacts were offset by unfavorable price and mix and restructuring charges. Quarterly sales volumes showed improvement and had a minor positive impact on a year-over-year basis.
