Cray Inc (CRAY) Wrap Up:

We design, develop, manufacture, market and service high performance computing (“HPC”) systems, commonly known as supercomputers. Our supercomputer systems provide capability, capacity and sustained performance far beyond typical server-based computer systems and address challenging scientific and engineering computing problems. We believe we are well-positioned to meet the HPC market’s demanding needs by providing superior supercomputer systems with performance and cost advantages when sustained performance on challenging applications and total cost of ownership are taken into account. We differentiate ourselves from our competitors primarily by concentrating our research and development efforts on the processing, interconnect and system capabilities that enable our systems to scale — that is, to continue to increase performance as our systems grow in size.  ... Cray Unveils "Cash-for-Clusters" Buy-Back Program

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - 11/17/09) - Out with the old and in with the new. Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ:CRAY - News) today announced its own take on the U.S. government's recent "cash-for-clunkers" program by launching a new buy-back program for installed or used clusters or workstations. Cray's "cash-for-clusters" program allows workstation and cluster users to trade in their current systems for credit towards the purchase of a new Cray supercomputer. "With a nod to the popular 'cash-for-clunkers' auto program, our 'cash-for-clusters' buy-back program gives workstation and cluster users a financial incentive to free themselves of their outdated systems," said Ian Miller, senior vice president of the productivity solutions group and marketing at Cray. "Simply give us your old workstations and clusters from any vendor, such as SGI, HP, Sun, IBM, Appro and Verari Systems and we will give you top dollar as a trade-in towards the purchase of a new Cray supercomputer -- it's as easy as that."Participants in the program can apply their trade-in credits towards the latest in high performance computing systems from Cray, including the Cray CX1(TM) deskside system, the CrayXT6m(TM) midrange system and the industry-leading petascale Cray XT6(TM) supercomputer. To qualify for the program, the trade-in system must be a cluster or high-end workstation between two and four years old, have been under a continual maintenance agreement since original delivery and still be in working order.Under a special arrangement with...

Science-based US supercomputer fastest in world

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- At least for the moment, the world's fastest supercomputer is devoted to solving scientific questions that may save the planet -- climate change, renewable energy, new medicines -- rather than advances in nuclear weapons that might blow it up. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory's high-performance Jaguar XT5 computer, built by Seattle-based Cray Inc., was named Monday as the fastest on the planet in the latest semiannual TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers. After a $19.9 million upgrade funded with federal economic stimulus money, Jaguar posted a performance speed of 1.759 petaflops or quadrillions of calculations per second. That dropped previous No. 1 Los Alamos National Laboratory's IBM Roadrunner system in New Mexico to No. 2 with a speed of 1.04 petaflops.Jaguar's stablemate at Oak Ridge, named Kraken, was ranked No. 3 with a speed of 831.7 teraflops or trillions of calculations per second. That makes the National Science Foundation-funded, Cray-built supercomputer owned by the University of Tennessee and the National Institute for Computational Sciences the top "academic" supercomputer in the world. The U.S. Department of Energy owns both Jaguar and Roadrunner, but uses them for different purposes. Jaguar is an "open science" tool for peer-reviewed research on a wide range of subjects. Roadrunner is devoted to the complex and classified evaluation of U.S. nuclear weapons."That tells you that science is really important, particularly for tackling some of the biggest challenges that we are facing today," said Thomas Zacharia, the Oak Ridge Lab's deputy director for science and technology."When you make these big trillion-dollar bets on energy, it needs to be informed by the best climate science," he said. "This machine is at the intersection of better climate change s...
