Key developments for Credit Agricole SA (CRARY)
Credit Agricole SA has started discussions regarding the sale of Credit Uruguay Banco SA. Media reports stated that a number of foreign banks, including Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A., HSBC Holdings Plc and Itau Unibanco Holding S.A. have expressed interest in Credit Uruguay. Credit Agricole stated that the potential sale is part of its policy to focus on operations in Europe and the Mediterranean.
Credit Agricole SA and Societe Generale Group have unveiled the identity of their new joint venture, called Amundi. The unveiling of Amundi is the latest stage in the alliance process, which is advancing on schedule. The project was approved by the French supervisory authorities, AMF and CECEI, in September 2009. Subject to the approval of the European competition authority, Amundi will come into being on January 1, 2010. According to Credit Agricole, the entity will offer a high performance asset management offering to institutional clients.
Credit Agricole SA has denied merger talks with Societe Generale Group and Groupama SA. A spokeswoman of Credit Agricol said: "Credit Agricole says it has not engaged Societe Generale and Groupama in any talks and has no intention of doing so." Le Monde newspaper had reported that Agricole was looking at a possible merger with Societe Generale and Groupama. The report quoted sources stating that Credit Agricole’s Chairman, Rene Carron and Chief Executive Georges Pauget were evaluating this possible three-way merger in the "greatest secrecy." As per the report, Credit Agricole would initially approach Groupama regarding a merger and then they would together seek a merger with Societe Generale. Le Monde added that Credit Agricole's regional retail banks were against any such transaction. Societe Generale said it had not been approached regarding a tie-up with Agricole and Groupama. It added that any such deal did not fit in with the company's strategy. Societe Generale’s shares were up by 0.4% and Credit Agricole shares were down by 1.5%.
