It operated approximately 423 passenger routes comprising 332 domestic routes, 75 international routes, and 16 Hong Kong and Macao routes, serving approximately 134 domestic and foreign cities; and 16 cargo routes, including 14 international routes, and 1 Hong Kong and 1 Macao route, as well as 5 passenger routes and 1 cargo route in its charter flights between mainland China and Taiwan. The company has a joint venture agreement with Pratt & Whitney Company for providing maintenance services on aircraft engines. The company was founded in 1988 and is based in Shanghai, the Peoples Republic of China. Flying Toward Recovery
HONG KONG -- Huge fuel-hedging gains and a strong rebound in domestic air travel helped Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines gain a total net profit of 1.2 billion yuan ($174.6 million) in the third quarter, bouncing back from a combined net loss of 5 billion yuan ($732.2 million) a year earlier. Air China ( AIRYY - news - people )reported late Tuesday night that it earned 885.3 million yuan ($129.6 million) in net profit in the three months that ended in September, recovering from a net loss of 1.97 billion yuan in the third quarter of 2008. Gains from changes in the fair value of financial assets including fuel hedging contracts, plus other investment income, were Air China's major profit drive, contributing 962.3 million yuan ($140.9 million) during the quarter.Air China's result, however, was lower than market expectations that it would post a net profit of about 1.2 billion to 1.7 billion yuan ($175.7 million to $248.8 million).
