Cross Country Healthcare earnings dip

Cross Country Healthcare’s earnings fell 84 percent in the third quarter, but the company sees demand for its nurse staffing services picking up. The Boca Raton-based company (NASDAQ: CCRN) reported net income of $968,000, or 3 cents a share, on revenue of $129.6 million in the third quarter. In the same period last year, it reported net income of $6.3 million, or 20 cents a share, on revenue of $178.1 million. Revenue was down across all of Cross Country’s service lines, including nurse staffing, physician staffing, clinical trial services and human capital management. Cross Country President and CEO Joseph A. Boshart said in a news release he noticed improvement in contract bookings in the nurse staffing business in the second quarter, and that is continuing. However, it can take several months for new contracts to show financial benefit on the company’s books, he noted. Since mid-September, travel nurse staffing has increased by 6 percent, and demand is much greater than that, he said. “So, the primary challenge we now face is a more familiar one to us: recruiting enough qualified nurses to meet increasing demand for contract nursing services,” Boshart said the release. For the fourth quarter, Cross Country predicted revenue in the range of $120 million to $123 million and earnings per share in the range of 2 cents to 4 cents. The company had net income of $6.3 million, or 20 cents a share, on revenue of $454.1 million, for the first nine months of this year. In the same period last year, Cross Country earned $18.4 million, or 60 cents a share, on revenue of $528.3 million. Cross Country shares fell 19 cents to close at $8.07 before its earnings were announced. The 52-week high was $17.34 on Sept. 10, 2008. The 52-week low was $4.84 on March 6. ...

Cross Country 3Q profit tumbles 84 percent

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- Health care staffing services company Cross Country Healthcare Inc. said Monday its profit shrank 84 percent in the third quarter, as the recession cut into demand for skilled nurses, and older doctors appeared to postpone retiring, leaving fewer positions to be filled. Cross Country said nurse and allied staffing revenue was cut in half as its customers chose to use more "per diem" nurses and fewer skilled professionals. Physician staffing revenue also declined, which the company said might be due to older doctors putting off retirements due to the stock market plunge and weaker housing market, as well as a dip in elective surgeries. Clinical trial revenue also decreased. The company said its profit dropped to $968,000, or 3 cents per share, from $6.2 million, or 20 cents per share. Total revenue slid 27 percent, to $129.6 million from $178.1 million. According to Thomson Reuters, analysts were projecting a profit of 2 cents per share and $132.4 million in revenue.Nurse and allied staffing revenue was down 50 percent to $64.1 million, with staffing volume down 48 percent. Physician staffing revenue slipped 3 percent to $39.6 million, and staffing days filled fell 13 percent.Clinical trial services revenue fell 35 percent to $25.4 million. Cross Country said it saw less demand in that business due to economic and financial market conditions, which reduced testing activity.Compared with the second quarter of 2009, nurse and allied staffing revenue declined 18 percent, physician staffing revenue dipped 3 percent, and clinical trial services revenue shrank 15 percent.Cross Country said it expects a profit of 2 to 4 cents per share in the fourth quarter, with $120 million to $123 million in revenue. That translates to a full-year profit of 22 cents to 24 cents per share, and revenue of $574 million...

Medical Staffing flips to $15M loss

Medical Staffing Network Holdings fell into the red as its revenue plummeted nearly 42 percent. The Boca Raton-based nurse staffing company (Pink Sheets: MSNW) suffered a net loss of $15.2 million, or 50 cents a share, on revenue of $79 million in the third quarter. That’s down from net income of $2.5 million, or 8 cents a share, on revenue of $135.8 million in the same period a year ago. An impairment of the company’s goodwill value led to $14 million in losses. Medical Staffing Chairman and CEO Robert J. Adamson said in a news release that his company’s 42 percent decline in revenue is “significantly better” than the revenue drops of 50 percent to 62 percent that his competitors in the nurse staffing industry have faced this year. At its cross-town rival Cross Country Healthcare (NASDAQ: CCRN), revenue fell 27 percent in the third quarter, year-over-year. “The health care staffing industry is still experiencing a difficult economic environment, although we are beginning to see some very early-stage positive trends,” Adamson said. “We have experienced an increase in demand in October, up from September levels, seemingly due to the flu pandemic.” As a result of continued losses, Medical Staffing’s liabilities have surpassed its assets. As of Dec. 31, the company had $2.1 million more in assets than liabilities, but as of Sept. 30, it had $16.8 million more in liabilities than assets. For the first nine months of this year, Medical Staffing lost $20 million, or 5 cents a share, on revenue of $265.2 million. In the first nine months of 2008, the company lost $49.4 million, or $1...
