Capitol Bancorp Ltd. reported earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2008. For the quarter, the company reported net loss of $32,495,000, or $1.90 per diluted share, net interest income of $41,039,000 and total interest income of $75,496,000 compared to net income of $5,974,000, or $0.35 per diluted share, net interest income of $46,668,000 and total interest income of $85,036,000 for the same period last year. The significant change in operating results was due to an aggressive restructuring of its operations in Michigan which includes a large provision for loan losses in the third quarter of 2008. For the nine months, the company reported net loss of $29,681,000, or $1.73 per diluted share, net interest income of $125,166,000 and total interest income of $231,136,000 compared to net income of $136,891,000, or $1.08 per diluted share, net interest income of $136,891,000 and total interest income of $244,129,000 for the same period last year. Revenue exceeded $145 million, a decrease compared to the approximate $155 million for the year-ago period, as modest increases in consolidated noninterest income were offset by continued margin compression.
