Federal Judge Set Aside $100 Million Punitive Verdict against BP PLC

A $100 million jury award against BP PLC over a 2007 refinery leak at its Texas City plant has been rejected. A federal judge in Houston set aside the punitive judgment of $10 million apiece for 10 contract workers who said they were injured. U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Devon Energy Corporation to Form Oilsands Joint venture at Kirby with BP plc

Devon Energy Corporation plans to spend $650 million (U.S.) in a heavy oil joint venture to develop BP plc's Alberta oilsands leases at Kirby, adjacent to Devon's Jackfish in situ project. In order to facilitate the joint venture, it will acquire 50% of BP's interest in the leases. Devon, who will operate the project, will pay BP $500 million at closing and commit to fund an additional $150 million of capital costs on BP's behalf over the next three years. Devon and BP also have agreed to negotiate a long-term heavy crude sales agreement for Devon's share of Kirby production. Devon envisions the Kirby leases will be developed through a multi-phased development plan similar to the Jackfish steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) development. Devon is looking at moving the first phase of a Kirby project forward within the next year.
