Key developments for BASF SE (BASFY)

BASF SE to Implement 2 Energy Efficiency Projects in Yekaterinburg

BASF plans to implement two pilot energy efficiency projects in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. The financial details of the projects were not provided. BASF SE Plans to Close Frankfurt Site in the Course of 2010

BASF SE is realigning its business for the fuel cell market. In the future, competencies for the production of high-temperature membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) will be concentrated in Somerset, New Jersey. Operational activities at the BASF Fuel Cell GmbH site in Frankfurt, Germany, will be discontinued effective December 31, 2009. BASF plans to close the Frankfurt site in the course of 2010. At the Somerset site, BASF Fuel Cell produces both high-temperature MEAs and important pre-products such as electrodes. Thus, Somerset is the only site that covers the entire production process for MEAs. The restructuring will result in the loss of 43 positions in Frankfurt. In addition to the activities in Frankfurt and Somerset, BASF has operated a laboratory in Yokkaichi, Japan, since May 2008. This laboratory is responsible for the application-specific support of local customers.

BASF SE to Close its Maleic Anhydride Facility at Feluy, Belgium

BASF SE will close its 115,000 tonne/year maleic anhydride (MA) facility at Feluy, Belgium, by the end of the year and withdraw all activities from the site. Some 133 jobs will be affected and negotiations with union officials will begin as soon as possible. BASF's MA business is suffering from unsatisfactory profitability due to overcapacity and resulting low margins together with the effects of the current economic crisis.

Pleasant Surprise For Euro Earnings

The first quarter was supposed to be dreadful, but it looks like most European companies put in a decent performance. More than half of the European blue chips who have reported earnings for the first quarter beat expectations, data from Thomson Reuters shows. The sector that did best? Banking. Forty nine European financial institutions have reported on the quarter so far, beating profit forecasts by an aggregate 9.0%. Health care stocks came in a close second, surpassing estimates by 8.0%. The worst performing sectors were consumer goods firms, whose earnings missed estimates by a whopping 132.0%, while basic materials, representing miners like Rio Tinto ( RTP - news - people ) and BHP Billiton ( BHP - news - people ), missed them by 106.0%. "Europe is still lagging behind the American market," said Amitesh Kumari of Thomson Reuters proprietary research. "Hopefully in the next six months, or in the third quarter, we'll see the scenario that's prevailing in the U.S., and a bit of improvement."European stocks fared pretty well too, with the STOXX 600 gaining 1.7% since the start of this year. Financial services firms once again have performed the best, with banks and financial stocks gaining 4.0%. ...
