Revenues for both the three months and twelve months ending December 31, 2009, were up significantly over the same periods in 2008 due to the impact of the other-than-temporary impairments on the 2008 amounts. Overall annual after tax operating earnings for 2009 were down $28.0 million from 2008, the result of lower after tax operating earnings from non-insurance lines, primarily in real estate investment subsidiaries. The after tax operating earnings from insurance operations increased $20.0 million due to stronger earnings from the life and annuity lines and improved results in the property and casualty lines. The Property and Casualty segment returned an after-tax gain of $12.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to an after-tax loss of $6.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2008. The company reported book value per basic share of $130.29 as of December 31, 2009 compared to book value per basic share of $118.35 as of December 31, 2008. Quote: One of the company's largest holdings is American National Insurance. The Texas-based company offers most personal lines of insurance, and like many insurance companies it has struggled recently. It reported a loss in the first quarter, primarily as a result of investment losses. Right now, the stock trades at less than half of tangible book value, has minimal debt on the balance sheets and plenty of cash to survive the difficult times. At today's price, the stock yields 4.5%, so you do get paid...

Two Cheap Real Estate Bets

Quote: American National Insurance has rebounded impressively from the lows earlier this year, but the stock is still cheap at just 70% of tangible book value. The company has a cash ratio of 15, so it should not have a problem with current expenses or liabilities. Actions Semiconductor is on the list and still trades below cash and is a "too cheap not to own" stock. Care Investment Trust is also on my list and is still at just 70% of tangible book and has a cash ratio of almost 6. I own all of these a...
