Albemarle Corporation engages in the development, manufacture, and marketing of engineered specialty chemicals. It operates in three segments: Polymer Additives, Catalysts, and Fine Chemicals. The Polymer Additives segment offers brominated, mineral, and phosphorus flame retardants that are used in plastic enclosures for consumer electronics, printed circuit boards, wire and cable, electrical connectors, textiles, foam insulation, and foam seating in furniture and automobiles. This segment also produces plastic and other additives, such as curatives, antioxidants, and stabilizers. The Catalysts segment provides refinery catalysts, such as hydroprocessing catalysts, fluidized catalytic cracking catalysts, and additives; and polyolefin catalysts comprising aluminum and magnesium-alkyls, which are used as co-catalysts, as well as metallocene/single-site catalysts that aid in the development and production of new polymers. The Fine Chemicals segment offers performance chemicals, including elemental bromine, alkyl bromides, inorganic bromides, and various bromine fine chemicals, which are used in various industrial applications; and tertiary amines for surfactants, biocides, disinfectants, and sanitizers; potassium and chlorine-based products that are used in industrial applications; alkenyl succinic anhydride for paper-sizing formulations; and aluminum oxides that are used in various refractory, ceramic, and polishing applications. This segment also engages in fine chemistry services business, which offers custom manufacturing, research, and chemical scale-up services for companies. The company provides its products and services to manufacturers of consumer electronics, building and construction materials, automotive parts, packaging, pharmaceuticals and agrichemicals, and petroleum refiners primarily in the United States. It has a strategic alliance with MeadWestvaco Specialty Chemicals. Albemarle Corporation was founded in 1993 and is based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Barry W. Perry to Join Albemarle Corp.'s Board of Directors

Albemarle Corp. announced that Barry W. Perry will join its board of directors, effective January 1, 2010. Perry brings a wealth of experience in the chemical industry to Albemarle and has managed virtually every aspect of the business cycle during his career. Most recently, Perry served as chairman and chief executive officer of Engelhard Corporation. Prior to this, he held various management positions within Engelhard since joining the company in 1993. Perry was a group vice president with Rhone-Poulenc from 1991 to 1993. Prior to joining Rhone-Poulenc, Perry held several executive positions during his 22-year tenure with General Electric. Perry also serves as a director of Arrow Electronics Inc. He also serves as a director for the Cookson Group PLC.

Albemarle to Form 50/50 Joint Venture with Ibn Hayyan Plastic Products Company

Albemarle Corporation announced that it will form a 50/50 joint venture with Ibn Hayyan Plastic Products Company (TAYF), an affiliate of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), called Saudi Organometallic Chemicals Company (SOCC). Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, the two parent companies will build a world-scale organometallics production facility strategically located in the Arabian Gulf Industrial City of Al-Jubail. SOCC will be the first company of its kind to produce these products in the region. The construction of the plant is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2009 with start-up anticipated by early 2012. The new facility will have the capacity to produce 6,000 metric tons of tri-ethyl aluminum equivalents annually. Tri-ethyl aluminum is used primarily as a co-catalyst in Ziegler-Natta type systems for olefin polymerizations. The manufacturing joint venture will be established and uniquely positioned to ensure the effective delivery of tri-ethyl aluminum to the region's growing customer base.
