The families of two Americans killed when an Air France-KLM jet plunged into the seas off Brazil are suing the airline and Airbus S.A.S. for negligence. According to the case filed on September 30, 2009 with a court in Houston, Texas, the families of Michael and Anne Harris believe that the air speed monitors and radar equipment known as pitots on the Airbus 330-200 were to blame among other things for the crash. Flight AF 447 crashed on May 31 in waters off Brazil after taking off from Rio de Janeiro bound for Paris with the loss of all 228 people on board. The cause of the accident has not been confirmed and the flight recorders are still missing. The families are claiming unspecified damages for the deaths of Michael and Anne Harris. The lawsuit quotes from two Airbus documents dating from September 2007 and November 2008 about procedures for replacing the pitots.
Air France-KLM announced that it would further reduce capacity during the winter season which starts on October 25, 2009. The reason for the move is the unfavourable economic environment which in turn has led to a sharp decrease in business traffic. The reduction in capacity will reach 1.8% on the long-haul network and 2.9% on the medium-haul network. Air France-KLM reminded that it would close or suspend flights on the routes Paris-Shannon, Bordeaux-Brussels and Lyon-Frankfurt. The same will happen to flights from Clermont-Ferrand to Biarritz, Lille, Marseille, Strasbourg and Toulouse and from London to Strasbourg, Paris, Nice and Geneva.
